Hallstatt – UNESCO World Heritage Site

Here’s the dilemma:
-If I write take the time to write about this place, I won’t get anything else done today. No studying German. No figuring out a to-do list. Probably no eating. No nothing.
-If I don’t take the time to write this, it will fade from my memory and I won’t be as inspired to write it as I was at during the experience.

Realistically, I should have written as everything was happening. Alas, I was too busy enjoying the experience instead of trying to write about it. Which brings me back to the dilemma of thinking/writing vs. experiencing.

But let’s be honest, I spend a lot of time inside my head, so all I have to do now is take myself back to how great this place was. So here we go:

It can be hard to get a great picture of this place because the lighting can be weird, but I would say this panorama taken with my S5 did the job pretty well.
(All I did to that image was run it through an Auto-Equalize on Gimp because it was a tad bluish, I promise.)

This is one of those places that you see in pictures and it’s almost unreal to think that you could go there some day.
If you think it’s just a pretty face and the town sucks on the inside, I suppose I can give you a couple more shots to prove otherwise (later in the post). But as usual, photos pale in comparison to the real thing. Honestly, my friend and I were only there for a couple of hours so we rushed around the town for a little bit, went up the hill, and came back down to take this shot. Of course we took a lot of pictures throughout the process, but we were worried about missing the last train back home so there is a lot that we didn’t do. We didn’t take a trip on a boat (because you already take a boat just to get into town from the train station). We didn’t eat at the very top of the mountain where the view is incredible. We didn’t walk through all the beautiful and intricate streets of this town that is quite legitimately tattooed to the side of a mountain. There was a small waterfall that we barely took a passing picture of, and there is a whole other side of town that we also didn’t see. This could easily have been a week-long trip to check out the three main towns and do all the activities that are available. Hallstatt is one of those towns that a lot of people write down on their bucket list, but it’s easy to miss out on. I even asked my roommates if they have ever been there, and they said that they haven’t. That’s because it’s located here. Sort of on the way to Salzburg, but not really. It’s also the second-to-last stop on its train route, so it’s not like you get to stumble onto this place and say “hey, let’s stop here for a bit and check it out!” No, you have to make it a point to go there. But man is it worth it.
According to the info that I’ve looked up, it has less that 1,000 inhabitants. That’s crazy. But I suppose it adds to the lore of this majestic little place. It definitely looks like a small town, and I didn’t see a lot of places that said “hotel,” so spending a night or two in this place must cost a pretty penny. Then again, it might not, but either way, it’s totally worth it. Since I was only there for a couple of hours and I didn’t engage in a lot of their activities, I cannot tell you how absolutely awesome this place is. I can only tell you how fascinating it seemed on first impression, but they say first impressions are vital, right?

Honestly, this place puts Colorado to shame. Almost. I mean, I have been to Colorado a couple of times and it’s definitely an awesome place. But here you get history, culture, weather (OMG, this was perfect),adventure, landscapes…. and I’m obviously a little biased because it’s in Europe. The final selling point for anyone reading this in Kansas is the fact that going from Kansas City to Colorado you spend 8 hours looking at this, whereas going from Vienna to Hallstatt takes 4 hours of looking at this, this, and finally this. Don’t get me wrong, Kansas can be b-e-a-utiful, and Colorado is great, but there are only a few things in life that I would do for 8 hours straight, and looking at non-changing landscape is not one of them. The trip through Western Austria is seriously something I would tell everyone to do and, if I had a million dollars, I would pay for some people to do it. It’s glorious.

O yeah, back to Hallstatt.

Well, I cannot write enough about the little that I saw and experienced in this place. The narrow streets bring you so close to everything that it gives you a sense of being a part of the place even though you’re a tourist (somewhat like Venice). The lighting on a sunny day makes everything shine and seem so Disney-like. And the view from on top of the mountain is something that not even the best of cameras will capture. You can do so many things in this place and the view is so astonishing that I cannot hope to describe it all, so I will definitely have to go back and you’ll have to do some research about what you would do if you visited (I already gave you the link).

In fact, I think what I will do now is leave you with a parting shot and let you daydream about how incredible this place is. That way you will make sure to visit some day, even if it’s not on the way to somewhere else.

Éste es uno de esos lugares que ves en fotos y parece locura imaginar que podrías ir ahí algún día.
Si solamente te parece una cara bonita y que la parte de adentro del pueblo apesta, supongo que te puedo enseñar más fotos para demostrar que no es así (más tarde en este artículo). Pero como siempre, las fotos no llegan a ser lo que es estar ahí en persona. La verdad es que mi amiga y yo sólo estuvimos ahí por unas cuantas horas, entonces nos apuramos por pasear a través del pueblo, subimos la montaña, y bajamos para tomar la foto de arriba (en la sección de inglés). Claro, tomamos un asco de fotos durante el proceso, pero estábamos preocupados de perdernos el último tren para regresar a casa y por eso no pudimos hacer muchas cosas. No nos subimos a un barco (porque de todos modos se toma un barco para llegar al pueblo desde la estación de tren). No comimos hasta arriba de la montaña donde la vista era increíble. No caminamos por las hermosas y complejas calles de este pueblo que literalmente está tatuado a una montaña. Había una cascadita que apenas y fotografiamos mientras que pasábamos, y hay todo un lado del pueblo que tampoco vimos. Fácilmente pudiera haber sido un viaje de una semana para ver los tres pueblos principales y para hacer todas las actividades disponibles. Hallstatt es uno de esos pueblos que mucha gente pone en su lista de lugares que hay que visitar antes de morir, pero es fácil perdérselo. Hasta le he preguntado a mis compañeros de cuarto si ellos han ido, y dijeron que no. Eso es porque se encuentra aquí. Más o menos en camino a Salzburgo, pero no tanto. También es la penúltima parada del tren que va en esa ruta, osea que no topas con este lugar y dices “se ve bien ¡vamos a bajar a checarlo!” No, tienes que de veras hacer el esfuerzo de ir. Pero vale la pena.
Según la información que he visto, ahí viven menos de 1,000 personas. Qué locura. Pero supongo que eso ayuda a que este lugarcito se vea tan esplendoroso. Definitivamente parece un pueblo pequeño, y no vi tantos lugares que dijeran “hotel”, osea que pasar una noches o dos en este lugar ha de valer un ojo. Bueno, tal vez no, pero como sea, de verdad vale la pena. Ya que solamente estuve ahí por unas horas y no hice todas las actividades, no puedo decir que tan absolutamente increíble es este lugar. Sólo puedo decir lo fascinante que pareció a primera vista, pero dicen que las primeras impresiones son esenciales, ¿no?

Honestamente, este lugar hace que Colorado se vea mal. Casi. Digo, yo he ido a Colorado una cuantas veces y definitivamente es un lugar genial. Pero aquí tienes historia, cultura, clima (no mames, el clima estaba perfecto), aventuras, paisajes… y obviamente soy un poco parcial porque está en Europa. La última cosa para convencer a cualquiera que está en Kansas es el hecho de que para ir de Kansas City a Colorado necesitas pasar 8 horas viendo esto, mientras que de Viena a Hallstatt necesitas 4 horas viendo esto, esto, y finalmente esto.
No me malinterpreten, Kansas puede ser heeerrmoso, y Colorado está de pelos, pero hay pocas cosas que yo puedo hacer en esta vida por 8 horas consecutivas, y ver un paisaje que no cambia no es una de ellas. El viaje a través del este de Austria es algo que le diría a todos que lo hagan, y si tuviera un millón de dolares, pagaría para que algunos lo hicieran. Es glorioso.

Ay si es cierto, estaba hablando de Hallstatt.

Pues, no puedo escribir suficiente sobre lo poco que vi y experimenté en este lugar. Las callecitas se te acercan tanto que te sientes como si fueras parte de este lugar aunque seas un turista (más o menos como Venecia). La luz en un día soleado hace que todo brille y parezca una escena de Disney. Y la vista desde la cima de la montaña es algo que ni siquiera la mejor cámara logra capturar. Puedes hacer tantas cosas en este lugar y la vista es tan increíble que no espero poder describirlo todo, osea que definitivamente voy a tener que regresar y ustedes deberás de hacer una búsqueda sobre lo que harían si visitaran (ya les di el link).

De hecho, creo que lo que voy a hacer ahorita es dejarlos con una última foto para que sueñen sobre lo increíble que es este lugar. Así se asegurarán de visitar algún día, aunque no esté de camino hacia otro lugar.

Questo è uno di quei posti che vedi nelle foto e sembra quasi pazzo pensare che puoi andare alcun giorno.
Se pensi che solamente è una faccia bella e la città fa schifo per dentro, supongo che posso darti più foto per dimostrare che non è vero (lo faro nel articolo). Ma come al solito, fotografie non riescono a dimostrare il posto reale. veramente, io e la mia amica siamo stati di là solamente per alcune ore e ci siamo affrettati per la città, siamo andati sulla montagna, e siamo tornati giù per fare la foto che ho usato nella versione inglese di questo articolo. Certamente abbiamo fatto una cifra di foto durante la girata, ma avevamo paura di perdere l’ultimo treno a casa e quindi ci sono molte cose che non abbiamo fatto. Non siamo andati su una nave (perché ci mette una per arrivare alla città dalla stazione di treno). Non abbiamo mangiato sulla cima della città dove la vista è incredibile. Non abbiamo percorso le belle e intricate strade di questo posto che è stato veramente tatuato al lato della montagna. C’era una piccola cascatina che abbiamo appena fotografato, e c’era un lato intero della città che non abbiamo visto. Questo senza dubito avessi potuto essere un viaggio di une settimana per vedere le tre città principali e fare tutte le attività disponibili. Hallstatt è una di quelle città che molte persone hanno nella sua lista di posti da vedere prima di morire, ma è facile perdere l’occasione. Ho perfino chiesto miei compagni di stanza se sono mai andati, ed hanno detto di no. Quello è perché si trova qua. Diciamo che nel camino verso Salisburgo, ma davvero no. È pure la penultima fermata nella sua ruta, dunque non è come se un possa dire “Ma che bello! Scendiamo qua per vedere!” No, devi fare uno sforzo per andare. Ma veramente merita farlo.

A detta dell’informazione che ho trovato, ne ha meno di 1.000 cittadini. Ma che roba. Ma supongo che questo fa che la città diventi più maestosa. Assolutamente sembra come una piccola città, e non ho visto tanti posti che dicano “albergo/hotel”, quindi rimanere una o due notte dovrà costare una bella sommetta. D’altronde forse no, ma di qualche modo veramente vale la pena. Dato che solamente sono stato di là per alcune ore e non ho fatto molte attività, non posso dirvi quanto assolutamente micidiale questo posto sia. Solamente posso dirvi come sembrava a prima vista, ma dicono che le le prime impressioni sono essenziali, certo?

Da dire la verità, questo posto metti Colorado in imbarazzo. Più o meno. Beh, io sono stato nel Colorado alcune volte e senz’altro è un posto geniale. Ma qui ti hai della storia, cultura, clima (ma dai! questo era perfetto), avventure, paesaggi… e sono un po’ parziale perché si trova in Europa. L’ultimo punto di venta per voi che siano nel Kansas è che per andare di Kansas City verso Colorado ci mettono 8 ore guardando questo, mentre andare da Vienna verso Hallstatt sono 4 ore vedendo questo, questo, e finalmente questo. Non mi sbagliate. Kansas può essere beelllllliiiisssiiimo, e Colorado è grande, ma ci sono poche cose in questa vita che io posso fare per 8 ore, e guardare il stesso paesaggio non è una. Il giro sull ovest di Austria è una cosa che io derei a tutti da fare, e se avessi un milliardo di dollari, pagherei volentieri per alcuni. È glorioso.

Ah certo, stavo parlando su Hallstatt.

Beh, non posso scrivere abbastanza su quel poco che ho visto e vissuto in questo posto. Le strade strette vi portano così vicino che hai un senso di formare parte della città anche se sei un turista (un po’ come Venezia). La luce durante un giorno soleggiato fa tutto brillare e sembrare molto Disney. E la vista dalla cima della città è una cosa che neanche la migliore macchina fotografica potrà catturare. Si possono fare tante cose in questo posto e la vista è così sbalorditiva che non spero potere descrivere tutto, quindi sicuramente dovrò tornare e voi dovrete ricercare su che cosa voleste fare se visitate (vi ho già dato il link).

Infatti, quello che farò allora sarà dire addio con un’ultima foto e lasciarvi a sognare su quanto incredibile questo posto è. Così vi assicurerai di visitare alcun giorno, anche se non si trova in camino verso un altro posto.
